Kyona McGhee is the Attorney and Founder of Trademark My Stuff the go to law firm for entrepreneurs and creatives looking to protect their brand
Published: December 9, 2022
How did you get your start as an attorney?
"When I was little, I had family members that had interactions with the law. That made me develop a strong interest in criminal law. I just wanted to help people understand their rights. I didn't really know what a lawyer was at that young age. I just knew that I wanted to be somebody who helped people understand their rights. In law school, I thought I would become the Johnnie Cochran of our day. After law school, I started a general practice firm, but trademarks ended up taking off. I changed from the McGhee Law Firm to Trademark My Stuff and things took off faster than I can imagine."
How many trademarks have you registered for your clients?
"We've registered over 2,000 trademarks. It's really my pride and joy seeing so many different brands on Target shelves or Instagram timelines that our firm had a hand in helping. It really is a beautiful thing."
What is a trademark?
"A trademark is basically the signature logo or name that makes your brand different from another brand. Registering your trademark ensures that no one can use your name or logo. It really protects your brand and allows you to have full ownership of what you're creating. It also ensures that there is no confusion in the marketplace on who owns what."
What the difference between a trademark and a copyright?
"It depends on what you're trying to protect. A copyright works best for music composition, poems, literature, art and photography. The copyright give you the rights to make copies and distribute that material. A trademark on the other hand is to protect a logo or business name. Both are a federal level protection but they are for two completely different things."
What makes your firm unique?
"Trademark My Stuff is not a perfect firm. However, we will do everything in our power to make sure are clients walk away satisfied. If we have to re-file at no cost to you or explore alternate options we will. We are a small firm, but we do our research and we know the game. I encourage everyone to go with the firm that best suits their needs, even if it's not Trademark My Stuff."
What are you plans for the future?
"My family just moved to Seattle, so that's an unexpected change that I didn't see coming. I just really want to expand what we already have going. I love working in intellectual property for small businesses. Our firm will be expanding into something new in January 2023 so I'm really excited about that. Everything is going to get bigger, but I still want to maintain great customer service. Our clients need more than trademarks and we want to be able to offer that on a wider scale."
